Backyard Poisons

Did you know there could be poisons in your backyard that you were not aware of? Some of them, such as Oleanders, are well-known. But there are other plants, such as lilies and Tulips, that many people are not aware they are dangerous for dogs.

Even some fertilizers are poisonous to dogs. There is a fertilizer, cocoa mulch, that can even kill a dog if he or she eats enough. The problem is that it smells good and apparently tastes good, because more and more dogs are eating it and becoming sick or even dying.

If you think your dog has ingested a poisonous plant or mulch contact your vet immediately. If you don’t know if it is poisonous take a sample of what they ate to a local nursery. They can tell you what the plant is and if it is poisonous.

For a list of poisonous plants read the article “Dog Health Alert: Poisons in Your Yard That Can Kill.”
