Homeless Dogs
I’ve mentioned the stories of a few of our dogs here on this site, such as Suzie the Newfoundland and Bonnie the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. They were two dogs we adopted from local shelters.
I don’t remember telling you about our two Chihuahuas. They were both strays that we took in off the street.
Ricky was found by my aunt wandering around. She was afriad he would get hit by a car so she stopped her car, got out and picked him up. Then she brought him over to our house for us to keep till we found his owners.
We thought for sure someone would notify the shelter that their chihuahua was lost, but no one did and Ricky became our dog. Actually he quickly became my mom’s dog. If anyone else came near him he barked or growled.
My mom loved him, though, and enjoyed once again having a Chihuahua. He really adored her and had to be wherever she was.
For a number of years the rest of the family endured Ricky (he really was cute, just too yappy) but the day came when he grew old and died.
Soon afterwards I saw a Chihuahua running around our neighborhood. We thought for sure he was just having fun and would go home when he got tired and hungry, but for three days he kept coming around. So finally I went outside and caught him.
Again we thought someone would claim him, but no one ever did and Sugar became my Chihuahua.
He’s very different from Ricky. Ricky was a light tan and very possessive of my mom. Sugar is black with brown markings (like a Rottweiler) and likes the whole family (although he prefers me).
Sugar was named for a character in the movie “Waterproof”. In the movie, Sugar is the elderly grandson of slaves. This wise old man makes everything turn out right. Seemed like a good name to give our sweet little Chihuahua.
There are millions of Stray Dogs in this country and not nearly enough Animal Shelters to help care for them. If you are thinking of Adopting a Dog then consider visiting a local Animal Rescue to find a family pet.
My aunt and uncle have adopted several Pugs from a local rescue (the one my aunt and I volunteer with). These dogs are happy and well-adjusted. The people who operate these rescues do so with very little thanks, very little money, and are completely devoted to helping unwanted pets find loving homes.

Hello I feel really sorry for all those poor dogs that are being abandonated each day. The story was really sad and interesting.
