Your Puppy Grows So Fast
Here’s another video about Ellie - the St. Bernard. The last video of Ellie showed her at about 8 weeks. She was 16 weeks old the day this next video was made. She’s such a sweet-heart.
In the video you see how Ellie’s family is taking her out for walks and exposing her to new environments and situations. You can do this with your puppy beginning at about age 17 weeks. Expose them to a wide range of environments and situations at the park, beach, local shopping districts, and whatever else is available to you.
At 16 weeks old Ellie is in the age called the “fear imprint stage” by trainers. At this age puppies make important decisions about what is and what isn’t safe.
For that reason it’s important to keep exposure to new things upbeat and safe so he doesn’t develop fears that will stay with him the rest of his life. Notice in the video how upbeat Ellie’s family keeps her walks and play time.
At this age it’s also very important to socialize your puppy with children. If you don’t have your own, find a willing parent to help your puppy socialize with their children. It’s important that the children are well-behaved, over five years old, experienced with dogs, and know how to be gentle with a puppy.
