State Dog of North Carolina - The Plott Hound
Did you know that some states have a state dog? Wisconsin, Maryland, and North Carolina are a few of the states that have voted on a state dog. It was in 1989 that North Carolina voted to have the Plott Hound, that originated in the mountains of that state, as their state dog.
Only a few dogs originated in the United States. That’s the case with the Plott Hound of North Carolina. This dog was bred by a resident of North Carolina, Jonathan Plott, around the year 1750. The dog’s purpose was as a hunter, and it is still a favorite today of hunters in North Carolina.
This is one breed that I had never heard of before, probably because it wasn’t accepted into the AKC until 1998, which is fairly recent.
I also didn’t know that any state had a state dog. Since part of our family originates from North Carolina, and my grandparents have a place there, I am especially interested in anything about that state, and am happy to find that their state dog is such an amiable dog that is a good family dog.
