Another Successful Pug Rescue
The day before Christmas weekend, 2006, we headed over to the local animal shelter to pick up another homeless Pug. The poor dog had been found wandering around a neighborhood. Thankfully, someone cared enough to turn him into the shelter before he starved to death or got hit by a car.
Why anyone would abandon a young, healthy Pug is kind of surprising. But I shouldn’t really be surprised. In the world today many people don’t think about their dog’s welfare, only about the trouble or inconvenience that having a dog can create.
The shelter employees guessed he was three years old. They also said that due to the holidays there had been very few visitors to the shelter looking for any dogs. That explained why no one else had tried to adopt him before we got there.
We ended up having him at our house from Friday until the following Tuesday because the rescue’s driver wasn’t free to come get him at our home until after Christmas. That was fine with us. He was very sweet and got along great with everyone.
We named him Bert and gave him lots of attention. It was easy to tell that he had been used to living outdoors since he was quite content to be outside all day long and he was not housebroken. At night we let him sleep in a large dog crate with a blanket.
The day we had to say good-bye was sad. He was gone too quick. But Bert is at the rescue now waiting to be adopted. He is such a sweet Pug he should find a good home very soon.
No dog should be abandoned by his family, but Bert’s story is going to have a happy ending. He will go to a family who loves him, who will keep him indoors where a Pug should be (they are very senstive to hot weather), and he will have a good home for the remainder of his life.
