Rescuing Michael Vick’s Pit Bulls
Michael Vick is serving 23 months in prison for illegal pit bull fighting. But what about the 50+ pit bulls and pit bull mixes that were found on his property?
Thanks to a pit bull rescue and the wonderful people who volunteer there, these dogs that for all their lives were abused, mistreated, and trained to fight are now learning to be pets. Nearly half were sent to a sanctuary in Utah where people are working with them. None of these dogs have shown aggression, the handlers say.
Others have been placed in foster homes, where they are learning to be pets. Usually these dogs would have been euthanized, but the Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Gill gave his permission for a pit bull rescue group to evaluate the dogs and rescue as many as possible. The U.S. Justice Department said they should be given a second chance.
And many of the dogs were able to be saved. They are great examples of how American Pit Bulls, even those who were trained to fight and were so terribly abused, can become family pets.
Here’s a short news video about the dogs that were rescued from Michael Vick’s illegal dog fighting kennels. It’s good to know there are people out there trained and willing to help give these dogs a second chance.
