How to Choose the Best Dog Food

Dogs have always been known as man's best friend and wherever man has traveled, dogs have too. Even with the advent of exotic pets, dogs still win tops as man's favored pet.

The concept however, of dogs as pets has also come to affect how they are treated. Because they are animals, some may tend to think that they are thoroughly dissimilar to humans. It may therefore come as a surprise that dogs, just like humans, can suffer medical conditions when improperly fed.

With improper diet, dogs can suffer from allergies, diabetes, heart failure, kidney problems and urinary tract problems. Dogs need more than just the occasional table scraps, and sometimes even more than his favorite dog food. Since we can't really understand everything our poor friends are trying to tell us, it has fallen on medical research to tell us what we should feed them.

Avoid Feeding Table Scraps

Although dogs may eat meat and vegetable table scraps occasionally, frequent ingestion of scraps may make them really sick and should therefore be avoided. Aside from controlling your dog's table scrap diet, be careful too with the kinds of scraps you hand over to dogs. Chocolate, broccoli and alcohol for example are not only unhealthy but dangerous for dogs.

Dry Dog Food is Better Than Moist

Dog food that is dry is generally better than watery ones. Aside from exercising a dog's chops, dry food also has fewer preservatives. Make it a habit to look at the labels of dog food to make sure that they have the right mix of minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates and protein. Carbohydrates should generally constitute 50% of your dog's diet.

Diabetic Diet

Dogs that are diabetic should have diets that are more on protein and less in carbohydrates. Although diet in diabetic humans plays a big role, its effect on diabetic dogs is markedly different, allowing only for some control of the disease.

Diet for Dogs with Allergies

If your dog suffers from allergies, the best kind of diet is one in which protein is modified. Omega 3 and Omega 6 are examples of modified protein. Dogs with stones in their bladders may also benefit from diets low in protein and the proper antibiotics.

Obese Dogs

Obese dogs can be helped naturally by reducing food intake to two-thirds of their normal intake or as specified by their veterinarians. Just like in humans, properly increasing fiber intake may also help in ensuring weight loss and better digestion in dogs.

As an added note of caution, it is always best to refer any concern, including diet concerns, to trained specialists. For pet dogs, licensed and credible veterinarians are their closest friends next to their owners.

As pet owners, you may usually feel like giving only the best to your canine friends. Sometimes though, what you think is best may not really be the right thing for your pets. Your dogs may suffer because of your ignorance and carelessness. Being vigilant and taking the time to educate yourself may save your dogs from discomfort, pain, and even death.
