Are Pets Worth all the Work?

Every week my brother and I spend two nights away from home at our grandparents’ house so we can attend Tae Kwon Do classes. Those two nights we are gone my mom has to take care of all our pets by herself.

Here’s a partial list:

get up by 6:30am to let the dogs outside

feed the 4 dogs in the morning and late afternoon and give them fresh water
brush the dogs

just before bedtime put the dogs outside for a few minutes

bring the dogs back inside and put them to bed

fill the 6 cats’ feeders and water bowls

feed the chicks, chickens, fish, turtle, guinea pigs, pet bird, and rabbit
It takes one person about 45 minutes to take care of the animals each morning and another 45 minutes at night. It’s a lot of work!

In return we get:

lots of love

companionship

to learn to care for others

to learn responsibility

more love

protection from strangers and intruders

friends to play with

The devotion and love we get from our dogs and cats more than makes up for all the work, we believe. Despite the heartache we feel each time a pet dies, and despite all the work, we would not want to live without them.
